It seems as though we are constantly bombarded with information on health and fitness from newspapers uncovering the most recent research, magazine articles claiming the “latest and greatest” way to get in shape, and friends and relatives who have just ordered the new (fill in the blank) tape on the internet that is sure to transform their bodies. I am not discounting any of these elements. I have used many of these methods in my own personal training. I believe that the more information you have, the better. But it gets a little overwhelming. It is hard to know what to do when, how often, and how hard.
In living life, I try to hold to two basic principles:
- You do not grow until you are pushed out of your comfort zone.
- No matter what your strengths and weaknesses are, there is an important niche for each person in this world.
I think that these two principles carry over to the realm of Health and Fitness. In our own personal exercise programs, it is difficult to change our bodies if we do not push outside what is initially comfortable. It is possible to maintain, to remain static, but not truly change. To remain static often breeds boredom, which can lead to loss of activity. Loss of activity leads to loss of fitness so it is important to change up the activities we do in order to keep our bodies changing and growing.
Fitness programs need to cater to the individual. Not everyone is a runner, a cyclist, a swimmer, a yogi or a bodybuilder. A personalized fitness program is one that is centered around what you love to do. If you enjoy your activities, you will continue to do them and become successful in your quest for a healthy lifestyle.
As you navigate your course through the health and fitness world, I will act as your guide.
